INNOVATIONS IN IOP MEASURING
Intra Ocular Pressure (IOP) measuring is an increasingly important challenge in various age groups, as, in the western world, glaucoma-driven high IOP is the commonest eye disease leading to blindness. Glaucoma can be treated with medication and its progress slowed significantly, if the disease is diagnosed at an early stage.

IOP measuring is performed with dedicated instruments - tonometers - which measure IOP from the surface of the cornea. Traditional applanation tonometers touch the cornea, whereas so-called air pulse (air puff) tonometers produce the measurement value without a physical contact.

ICARE®: PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS

Icare® tonometer (TA01i)The Icare® tonometer (TA01i) is based on a new measuring principle, in which a very light probe is used to make momentary contact with the cornea. The measurement is barely noticed by the patient and often does not even cause corneal reflex. For ophthalmologists this is good news, because the device not only makes IOP measuring a more pleasant experience on all patients, it is also an important break-through for succeeding with non-compliant patients (ie children and dementia patients).

The easy usage and dynamic patient flow obtained by the Icare® tonometer make it a very important instrument for general practitioners, optometrists, occupational health care and other medical personnel.

Requiring no drops, neither specialized skills for its use the quick and painless Icare® tonometry has an important role in glaucoma screening programs of masses.

  • The probe touches the cornea very gently
  • Measurement takes place in 0.1 seconds
  • Corneal reflex after 0.2 seconds
  • Measurement of motion parameters
  • To be repeated 6 times in order to minimize deviation and to produce a calculated measurement value
  • Whole procedure (6x both eyes) takes about one minute

Advantages

  • No anesthetic is needed
  • The device is small, handheld and portable
  • The method is accurate, and the force applied to the eye is very small
  • The rapid measurement enables monitoring in non-compliant subjects.
